Personal information taken in Nevada DMV office break-in
Information on Consumer Privacy Officials at the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced March 11, 2005 that personal information on more than 8,900 people was on computers stolen during a break-in. The stolen computer contained names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, photographs, and signatures of residents of southern Nevada who obtained driver’s licenses between November 25 and March 4, according to DMV chief Ginny Lewis. The DMV originally said the information was encrypted, but Digimarc, Nevada’s encryption provider, later said the information was not encrypted. The DMV has ordered all personal information moved from computers to prevent a recurrence, and the department will send certified letters informing those whose information has been compromised.
